Text LayerLast 20 and 21 July we were in Girona presenting CICLO EXCHANGE within the activities organized by Bòlit Center Art Contemporani Girona on the occasion of the exhibition of the English artist living in Catalonia Denys Blacker. Denys Blacker is a multidisciplinary artist with a great career in action art and in the creation of collaborative projects focused on the research and practice of action art, such as the Gresolart association, the women’s performance festival FEM, Corpología (magazine and performance sessions) or Pájaros en la Cabeza (research and practice group). It has been a pleasure to share our project in this context and to have collaborated with Denys. For CICLO EXCHANGE GIRONA we had the participation of our hostess and Martine Viale, Canadian artist living in the south of France and one of the participating artists in the last edition of CHARCO EXCHANGE. Next, Isabel León performed the score “Lenguage” by Ana Matey, making the piece “LETAJG”. In it, Isabel takes the main elements of the score (an eraser and the word “lenguage”, a mixture of language and lenguaje) and incorporates the word “llenguatge” (Catalan), in a very physical action, in which she writes and at the same time erases these three words and builds a new on, in an attempt to subtly ironise about the importance we sometimes give to certain details, when what ultimately interests us is to be able to communicate. Finally, Martine Viale carried out an action based on her score for LUNCHBOX, “Cartography of an action”, in which she starts with small scores written in “posits”, with a clear intention to establish a direct communication with the audience. Finally, the last message invites the public to fill some glasses with breath and turn them on a table.

Project Description

CHARCO EXCHANGE es un proyecto en el que diferentes artistas españoles y canadienses trabajan juntos en una experiencia que incluye laboratorio en la distancia, laboratorio presencial y muestras del trabajo en diferentes contextos. Este proyecto ha contado con dos fases: la primera celebrada en Canadá en mayo del 2015, y una segunda fase en España en el otoño del 2016. Esta publicación recoge el trabajo desarrollado en la primera de las dos fases: CHARCO EXCHANGE I, proyecto producido y co-organizado por el Centro de Arte FADO dedicado a la Performance desde 1993 en la ciudad Toronto y el apoyo de DARE­DARE, LINK&PIN y RAts9 Gallery en Montreal y VideoFag en Toronto (Canadá).

CHARCO EXCHANGE I recoge el trabajo realizado a partir del trabajo en la distancia y del encuentro-­laboratorio entre las artistas españolas Ana Matey e Isabel León con los artistas residentes en Canadá Sofïa Bensaïd y Olivier Fokoua. El documento incluye reflexiones, dibujos e imágenes de todo el proceso, tanto por parejas como conjunto.

Este proyecto contó con una primera etapa de trabajo en la distancia previa al encuentro entre el 11 de mayo y el 1 de junio de 2015, que contó con un primer laboratorio en Montreal (del 11 al 23). Durante este periodo los artistas participantes trabajan por parejas: Sofïa con Ana y Olivier con Isabel. En la última semana, los cuatro artistas se trasladaron a Toronto donde continuaron investigando en grupo, con una muestra final del trabajo realizado el sábado 30 de mayo.

La publicación incluye fotografía, dibujos, reflexiones, documentación de los encuentros y texto introductorio por la Directora del Centro de Arte FADO Shannon Cochrane.
